Selecting an Early Bronco Roll Cage

In order to select the best roll bar or cage for your classic Ford Bronco, you need to first answer a few questions.

Do you have a rear seat?

If your early Bronco has a rear seat installed, it is generally recommended to install a family style roll cage. This type of roll bar includes bars that extend to the back of the Bronco, providing a level of protection for rear passengers. You will also likely use the vertical bars on the rear family cage to mount the seat belt retractors if you have opted to run shoulder belts in the back of the Bronco.

What are your welding skills?

Many early Bronco roll cages on the market require welding for installation, and this is the case for some but not all of the roll bars offered here at WILD HORSES. Our Custom Family Roll Cage, Baja Custom Roll Cage, and Sport Custom Roll Cage all come pre-assembled with no welding required. This is a great way to add a quality roll cage to your early Bronco without having to weld or hire a fabricator to install the cage in your Bronco.

The San Felipe Roll Bar is a bolt-together bar, so it can also be installed without welding. However, we do recommend welding it together for strength, and if you are adding the front or rear cage to the San Felipe bar you will need to weld those on.

Additional Considerations

A major consideration when installing a new roll bar in your early Bronco is the aesthetics of the bar. Adding a roll cage to the Bronco will change its appearance in a big way. Finding an early Bronco roll cage that is aesthetically appealing to your personal style is crucial to insuring you are happy with the final product.

Another item to consider is the level of protection required. While no company offering early Bronco roll bars will warrant the level of protection each bar provides, certain features of the roll bar or roll cage can affect the level of protection one can expect to get. A bar without a front cage is going to provide only minimal protection for the driver and passenger up front. Same goes for a bar without rear cage protection if you have rear seat passengers.

The thickness and quality of material also plays a roll in the level of protection. Most of our roll bars and roll cages are made of 2-3/8" OD, 3/16" wall American steel which provides increased strength over typical early Bronco roll bars that are made of 2" OD 0.120" wall steel.
