Early Bronco Ford 9" Rear Axle Housing

Heavy Duty, Fits 3-1/8" Large Bearing

Most of the original early Bronco Ford 9-inch rear axle housings are weak "banjo" type housings. They had a round center section with minimal support for the axle tubes. In 76-77 Ford Broncos, the rear axle housing was a little better with a larger, wider center section. This provided added support for the axle tubes. The WH Super 9 Ford 9-inch Rear Axle Housing offers a superior housing at an affordable price with the following features.

  • 23" wide Rear Axle Housing Center Section
    • Welded for additional strength and support for the axle tubes.
  • 3" x .250" wall DOM tubes
    • Provides a major increase in strength over stock housing.
  • Large Bearing Large Bolt Billet Housing Ends

  • Pre-welded Leaf Spring Mounts

  • Drilled & Taped Breather Hole accepts Stock Breather Bolt

If switching from a small bearing housing, you will need to add the available 1/2" T-bolts. Third member studs are also available. If you have them, you can use your old studs and T-bolts (large bearing) from your existing housing.

This early Bronco rear axle housing comes in bare steel.

Asked by Shaun, May 28, 2024 15:23

Q: Can I use the drum brakes and backing plates from my 67 small bearing 9"

1 Answer

Answered by sales - May 28, 2024 15:24

A: No, not without modification to the backing plate at the very least. Also, you would need to have large bearing axles that match the brakes bearing offset. Usually you cannot mix and match.

Asked by Joel David Rodriguez, May 28, 2024 15:22

Q: Since the Axle tubes are a smaller 3", does that mean we need to use smaller diameter U bolts when installing the leaf springs? I noticed your heavy duty Ubolt set uses 3 1/4" wide U bolts

1 Answer

Answered by sales - May 28, 2024 15:25

A: You do not need different u-bolts. When tightened, they will follow the contour of the tubing, and hold tight.

Q: I recently purchased this housing. I will be building it for my bronco. I definitely use my rig, but I dont abuse it. Do you see any need to truss this housing? I will be running a Tru hi9 center section with 4.88 gears and a yukon grizzly locker with your 35 spline axles. I plan on running 37 inch tires.

Answered by sales - May 28, 2024 15:25

A: You may not need it, but the added strength and rigidity may be nice. And... it looks cool.

Asked by Mark Womack, May 22, 2023

Q: Will the Explorer disc brake kit bolt up to these ends?

1 Answer

Answered by sales - May 24, 2023

A: Normally the Explorer setup uses 3/8 retaining bolts. If your kit does, then no, not without re-drilling the backing plates. If your kit uses 1/2 retaining bolts, then we are not aware of any issue and it should work.

Way stronger than my stock banjo housing, and probably marginally stronger than a 76-77 housing due to the 1/4" thick tubes. Mine didn't come notched as described though? Maybe a fluke, or time to change the product description. Notched or not wasn't a deal breaker for me, but it would easily get 5 stars if it only matched the description!
Note From WILD HORSES: Thanks for the heads up. Updates have been made sorry for any confusion.
